Shirley (Hawkes)'s Story
Shirley (Hawkes) Webber, age 85, of Newburyport, died Thursday, February 16, 2017, peacefully in her sleep after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Shirley was the fourth child of Marjorie (Pearson) and Eugene Hawkes. Born April 15, 1931, Shirley grew up on Rings Island with her siblings, Velma, Vincent, Paul, David and a surviving sister, Mrs. Madeline Knox. She would walk over the bridge to attend Central Congregational Church every Sunday. Shirley enjoyed fellowship with The First Parish Church of Newbury in later years.
Shirley was a graduate of Newburyport High School, Class of 1949, with her classmate and sweetheart, Donald Webber.
Donnie and Shirley married in 1951 before Donnie went to Korea. While gone, Shirley took a job in a pickle factory and saved enough to buy their first house in Amesbury. After Donnie’s service they moved to Newburyport where they raised five children. Shirley was a gifted seamstress and sewed for all her children and grandchildren, Halloween costumes being a favorite. She took in tailoring from local folks to make a little extra money. Shirley’s hands were never empty, knitting, sewing or making family albums.
A loving mother and grandmother, Shirley leaves behind one son, Donald Jr. and Theresa Webber; and four daughters, Wendy and Tom Tobias, Cheryl and Mario Makhluf, Eva and Fred Jackman and Gena and David Thurlow. She was greeted by two grandchildren and also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Shirley’s family would like to send a heart felt "Thank You" to Patty, Michelle, Fran and all the staff at Brigham Manor for the love and care they showed our mother.
An hour of visitation will be held Thursday, February 23, 2017, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, immediately followed by services at the funeral home and burial in Belleville Cemetery, where she will be eternally reunited with her beloved husband, Donnie.
