Harbor City, CA - Ruth I. (Campbell) Butt, age 92, long time Newburyport resident, died peacefully in her home in Harbor City, Calif., on January 14, 2019. Her family was by her side. Ruth and her husband Reggie had relocated in 2008 to live with their son, Philip, in the Los Angeles area.

Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, on February 22, 1926, Ruth was the daughter of the late George S. Campbell and Kate Hogg Campbell and was a graduate of Newburyport High School, class of 1943.

Ruth worked for many years in Newburyport as an insurance clerk. She was a long-time member of the Hope Baptist Church, where she worshiped and sang for many decades in the choir beside her beloved sister, the late Margaret “Peggy” Campbell Harvey. Since 2008 Ruth had attended the Ocean View Baptist Church in San Pedro, California.

Ruth was a wonderful mother, wife, friend, and neighbor. She will be especially missed by her husband of 73 years, Reginald T. “Reggie” Butt, of Harbor City, Calif.; her eldest son, Reggie Butt of Las Vegas, Nev.; her youngest son, Philip Butt, of Harbor City, Calif.; her nieces, nephews, and in-laws throughout the county, and her many friends in New England and California.

It was Ruth’s wish to be cremated in California and to have her ashes held by her family. Upon the passing of her beloved husband, Reggie, their ashes will be taken to Newburyport by their two sons, where there will be a memorial service, the combining of ashes into a single urn, and burial in Highland Cemetery, Newburyport.

I miss my friend and sister in Christ but I know she is happy with her Lord and Savior and is awaiting her dear husband Reggie to join her. My love to her two sons, Reggie and Philip.

Rest In Peace. So many fond memories- mostly seeing her in the choir- and working in the church kitchen (always with her beloved sister!). What a testimony of love she demonstrated to everyone who ever met her.

Ruthie was so full of life! I remember showing her some tap steps in your kitchen while waiting for Philip to get ready for school in the mornings. She was a lovely lady and I’m grateful for her friendship! ❤️Donna D.

Learning to live with the empty space inside that my mom occupied. We will miss her terribly.
