Robert H. Dennis of Hampstead, N.H., and formerly of West Newbury, Newburyport, and Byfield, Mass., passed away peacefully in his sleep at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, N.H., on November 8, 2017, his 84th birthday. With constant loving care and encouragement from Barbara (DeMerritt), his wife of 58 years, Bob struggled to recover from and August fall and was visited faithfully by siblings, children, grandchildren, and dear friends.
Born in Marblehead in 1933, Bob was the son of Walter H. and Bernice (Foster) Dennis. In addition to Barb, he is survived by four siblings, Miriam Walker, Carole Frisbee, Marjorie Swanson, and Allan and Allan’s wife Anne (Keatings) Dennis. He was father to Robert Jr., Paula J., and Julie A., as well as their spouses, respectively, Caroline (Packard), Henry O. Marcy 5th, and Andrew P. Ossolinski. He was beloved Grampa to Amanda E. Dennis and her fiancé, James J. Ivanovich and Mitchell R. and Athena (Stremmenos) Dennis; Cheyenne R. and Henry O. Marcy 6th; and Ethan P., Noah A., and Morgan J. Ossolinski. Robert was great-grandfather to Robert Z. Dennis and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
As a child, Bob collected recyclables for the WWII effort; at 9 he moved to West Newbury where he began work on the family farm and went to school. He graduated from Newburyport High School in 1952, attended aero-technical school, and became an aircraft mechanic for the USAF, serving stateside during the Korean War. He briefly worked for Capitol and Northeast Airlines and had a career spanning more than three decades at Eastern Airlines. In his retirement, he worked for the Nbpt Cooperative Bank/Geo Peabody Bank for eight years and ran a thriving eBay business for 20 years where he had over 7000 feedbacks—all positive. Bob was active in the Belleville Church and enjoyed traveling the US, Canada, and Europe. He was an avid collector, especially of antique postcards, and enjoyed treasure hunting, gardening, and home maintenance. He could fix anything. He was an engaging storyteller who loved people and was grateful for the many blessings in his life. His family is grateful for the many cards sent and visits made by the wonderful friends in his life.
A celebration of Bob’s life (smart casual dress) at Brookstone Park and Event Center, 14 Route 111 in Derry, N.H., is Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 2 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Friends of the Hampstead Public Library, and St. Anne’s Food Pantry in Hampstead, N.H.
