Robert E.'s Story

Robert E. Hills, age 81, longtime resident of West Newbury, passed peacefully at his home in the loving presence of his family, Monday evening, March 6, 2017. He was the devoted husband of almost 48 years of Elizabeth “Betty” (Merrill) Hills.
Born in Goffstown, N.H. September 23, 1935, he was the son of the late Richard and Gladys (Ewell) Hills and had attended Newburyport schools.
“Bob” was a proud Air Force veteran, having served during the Korean War from November 12, 1952 until his honorable discharge on November 11, 1956 with the rank of Staff Sergeant, then served another four years from March 14, 1958 to March 13, 1962, discharged as an Airman First Class. He was a member of the Charles L. Carr American Legion Post No. 240 of West Newbury as well as a Past Commander.

Returning home from military service, he became employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he worked as a shipwright, eventually retiring from the Shipyard in 1994.

Bob was a hard working man, who lived for his family. He shared with them his love of the great outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and was an extremely talented woodworker.

He never missed an opportunity to let them know how proud he was of his family, how much he loved them and how much joy they brought him. To them he was the greatest husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather there ever was!

In addition to his wife and best friend, Betty, he leaves behind his son, Richard “Butch” Hills and wife, Martha of West Newbury; his daughter, Jodie MacKinnon and partner Mark Sanborn of Newburyport; his four grandsons, Joshua Hills and fiancee Jolene Warso, Geoffrey Hills and wife, Valerie and Kyle and Jack MacKinnon; a great-grandson, Liam Hills; Joe Leary, Jr., who was “like a son”, along with many dear friends.
By his request, there will be no visiting hours, no funeral services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Great Lakes Caring Hospice, 350 Merrimac Street, Newburyport, MA 01950. Arrangements are by Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury.
