Hickory, NC - Richard F. (Dick) Wright, 79, died unexpectedly, February 6, 2019, at Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, N.C. Born in Ticonderoga, N.Y., in the Adirondacks, he was the son of the late Walter and Valeska Wright. Dick graduated from Ticonderoga High School and during that time developed an interest and talent for music. After high school he traveled the country playing saxophone and clarinet with various bands, including the Jimmy Dorsey Band. He played summers in the Hampton Beach Shell. Dick played wedding events as well as many venues around Boston with the Bob Batchelder Big Band. He attended BU and Berklee School of Music where he received a bachelor's degree and taught music in the Danvers Public School System, retiring in 1999. Dick and Nancy moved to Newburyport in 1969 and his love of the water led him to purchase his first sailboat. He was a life member of the American Yacht Club. He and Nancy spent many years sailing from Newburyport to various harbors along the Maine coast. Dick loved to bird-watch and was never without his binoculars and bird book. Always an animal lover, he volunteered for the Merrimack River Feline Rescue. Dick’s gentle manner, dry sense of humor and natural curiosity made him a great conversationalist. He was an avid reader and could always be found at the local coffee shop or bookstore having a lively conversation or telling a joke or two. In 2007, Dick and Nancy relocated to Hickory, N.C., to be near their grandchildren. It didn’t take him long to find the closest trout stream to enjoy fly fishing and the outdoors. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Bilek Wright; two children, Richard W. Wright (Kristin) of Lenoir, N.C., Pamela T. Wright of Nice, France. Dick was the grandfather of three beloved grandchildren, Nathaniel, Lily and Zachary. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bass-Smith Funeral Home, Hickory, N.C. Online condolences may be sent to www.bass-smithfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made in Dick’s name to the Merrimack River Feline Rescue, Salisbury, MA 01952.

To the Wright family
The passing of Dick broke my heart. I have many many fond memories of sitting in the living room on Woodland St in Newburyport chatting with Dick. The Wrights have always been like family to me. Dick will be greatly missed.

Dear Nancy,
Deepest condolences to you and your family. Though I didn't know your husband, from the story in the paper, it seems as if he was a very special and talented and interesting person. You must have so many good memories from your life together.
May the memories and the support of family and friends help you through the loss of your life's partner.
Please care for yourself.
