Patricia Wells

March 11

Patricia Wells Winchester, Mass. - Patricia Wells of Winchester, peacefully on March 11, six days before her 95th birthday. Beloved wife of the late William H. Wells. Born Lorena Patricia Dawley in 1924, Pat lived a long, active and fruitful life. She grew up in Suffern N.Y., then attended Bucknell University and finished her education at Columbia University. Her professional career started as an Editor at two regional newspapers. After marrying Bill, they went to work together as co-editors of several newspapers. She then spent five years as Editor at McGraw Hill. Her next career was raising her six children, which was much more challenging, but she continued to practice her editing skills on them. As her children grew older, she worked keeping residents alert as the Activities Director at local nursing homes. She continued this well into her eighties while living and working at New Horizons in Woburn. Pat was very active in local politics, and fought passionately for civil rights. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters for 40 years, including as President of the Winchester chapter in the 1990s. She was very active and outspoken in her community: Arts Lottery Council, Town Meeting, Winchester Interfaith Housing Corporation, Council on Aging, Community Schools Association, High School Parent Faculty Association, to name a few. Bill and Pat together were a force to be reckoned with in Winchester. As a devout Catholic, she was an active parishioner at St. Mary's Church. She was as devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they were to her; rarely did a weekend go by with without a horde of Wellses descending upon the family home. She loved to travel, although in earlier years this entailed bundling up Bill and her six kids in a Volkswagen bus for a long, not terribly restful drive. Later she and Bill traveled Europe extensively. They loved Windjammer cruises. Pat also loved to fish, which she had inherited from her parents as a child. She enjoyed bridge, book groups and reading plays with Bill and her many friends.
She leaves her devoted children: Jacqueline Harris and her husband Jonathan of Avon; John Wells and his fiancé Marisa Stevens of Newburyport; Jeanne Hobbie and her husband David of Acton; Mary Wells and her husband Richard Hanauer of Oxford; Patricia Kennedy and her husband Robert of Winchester and James Wells of Woburn; Her Grandchildren: Elizabeth Platka and her husband Steven of Abington; Jake ( Nina) Harris of San Diego Calif.; Jacob Harris of Avon; Justin Harris and his wife Summer of San Diego Calif.; Timothy Harris and his wife Teresa of Easton; Rachel Hanauer and her husband Christopher Lapidas of East Greenwich R.I.; Joshua Hanauer of Chicago Ill.; Ross and Ian Kennedy of Winchester and Svetlana ( Lana) of Acton; Her Great grandchildren Alyvia, Ryan and Nathan of Abington; Isabella and Archer of San Diego Calif. In memory of Pat, donations may be made to Catholic Charities or the Alzheimer's Association.
A Mass in Celebration of Pat's life will be held at St. Mary's Church in Winchester on Saturday April 13 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception.
