Norman L. "Lefty"'s Story

Text size

It is with profound sadness that the family of Norman L. “Lefty” Cote announces his passing on June 26, 2017.
Better known by all his friends as Lefty, he was a longtime resident of Amesbury. Lefty, husband of Maureen (Leary) Cote, passed away at the Merrimac Valley Hospice House in Haverhill. They recently celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Lefty attended St. Joseph School in Amesbury and Immaculate Conception High School in Newburyport. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served four years during the Korean Conflict.
He was the son of the late Margaret M. (Flynn) Cote and Leon E. Cote. Lefty leaves one sister and two brothers, Margaret (Cote) Mooney of Astoria, N.Y., John R. Cote and wife, Barbara of East Kingston, N.H., and Paul D. Cote of Exeter, N.H.
While living in Amesbury, Lefty was employed as meat manager with First National Stores for 25 years. Upon their closing, he worked at Market Basket as a meat cutter for 10 years. Lefty was a member of the Knights of Columbus at Holy Family Parish, FCOA member/Amesbury Senior Citizens, Life Member of the VFW, American Legion, School Committee Member (1964-1969), and longtime member of the Amesbury Polish Club. Lefty loved sports. His hobbies were basketball, softball, bowling, and golf. As a young man, Lefty coached CYO boys basketball and coached girls Little League softball. It goes without saying that Lefty was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
After retirement, Lefty could be seen daily at the Amesbury Golf Course and bowling every Tuesday night with the Polish Club Bowling Team. During retirement, he worked part-time for Market Basket. Lefty moved to East Kingston, N.H. in 2004 to enjoy condo life. In 2006, Lefty suffered a stroke and being the trooper he was, he worked conscientiously on his recovery.
Lefty spent three years attending a program called “Senior Class” Adult Day Program in Hampstead, N.H. This program, with its stimulating and loving activities, brought much joy to Lefty and our family. We will be forever grateful for the hard work, love and support of all the Senior Class staff.
In addition to his wife, Maureen, Lefty is survived by three children, Michael S. Cote and wife, Theresa of Wolcott, Conn., Kathleen C. Fruehsamer and husband, Drew of East Northport, N.Y., and Diane E. Cote and wife, Samantha Turner of Woburn, Mass. Lefty, known as Papa to his grandchildren, will be lovingly remembered by Angela, Thomas, Jakob, Jordan, Skylar, and great-grandchild, Blake; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
The wake will be held on Friday, June 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Paul C. Rogers Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury. There will be a funeral Mass on Saturday, July 1, at Holy Family Church in Amesbury at 10:30 a.m. followed by interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery and collation at the Holy Family parish center. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to Senior Class Adult Day Services would be greatly appreciated, 201 Route 111, Hampstead Commons, Hampstead, NH 03841.
