Myles "Chip"'s Story
Myles “Chip” Knight Haley, Jr., age 60, longtime Newbury resident, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 with his loving family by his side.
Born in Amesbury, March 9, 1956, he was the eldest of three sons of Joanne (Bartlett) Haley of Newburyport and the late Myles K. Haley. Chip, as he was known by many, was a graduate of Newburyport High School, Class of 1974, and then attended Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston.
Chip grew up on the Plum Island and Parker Rivers, and spent summers as a lifeguard along the Plum Island and Salisbury beaches. He was also a tireless, dedicated construction worker and spent many years working with family for Morse Foundations of Salisbury.
In his free time, Chip spent many memorable summer days “down river” enjoying time with his family and numerous friends. He also had a passion for jeeps and could be found cruising around town in his orange 1974 CJ5 jeep or in his spotless truck with the family dog “Tilley” by his side. Chip also followed the Boston College football and hockey teams, to support the school in which his son attends, as well as the New England Patriots.
In addition to his mother, Joanne, Chip leaves behind his devoted wife of 28 years, Kathryn I. (Barrett) Haley of Newbury; his son, Matthew; his two brothers, Carl Haley and wife, Leslie, Andrew Haley and wife, Maureen, along with several nieces and nephews, cousins and many dear friends who will all miss him deeply.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday, December 11, 2016 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Elliot, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport. Burial will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing a scholarship in his name to support local graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue further education in the fields of engineering, maritime, or the trades – all areas that Chip was passionate about. Those interested in contributing to the scholarship may make donations through his wife or son, Kathryn or Matthew, and can be mailed to 9 Old Rowley Road in Newbury.
