Mary Elizabeth (Harrington)'s Story
Mary Elizabeth (Harrington) Merrill, age 93, of Newburyport and Bonita Springs, Florida, passed peacefully Monday evening, January 30, 2017, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, with her family by her side. She was the devoted wife of the late Robert E. Merrill.
One of twelve children of the late Maurice J. and Annie (McCabe) Harrington, she was born on September 20, 1923, in North Cambridge and attended school at St. John the Evangelist.
Her life was dedicated to her family and she took great pride in being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. As a woman of deep faith, she felt truly blessed for the bounty of her life and the unending love she received from her family and friends.
Spending most of each year in Florida since the 1970’s, she was actively involved in the community through her 90th year as a member and former President of the Lady of the Elks Lodge No. 2753 of Bonita Springs and Estero and as a member of the Harbor Club at Imperial Harbor, the Harbor Club Bowling League and the Gemstones Ladies’ Bowling League. She was a faithful member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Bonita Springs.
Those left behind to treasure the memories of her life are her daughters, Joanne Burke and husband Jack, and Maureen Woods and husband, Dan, all of Newburyport; her grandchildren, Matt Porter and fiancee Brittany Goering, Jillian Campbell-Burke, and Jasmine MacDonald and her husband Ian; her great-grandchildren, Bailley, Devynn and Quinn MacDonald, and Lillyana Slater; her brother, Robert Harrington and wife, Roberta, along with several generations of many nieces and nephews, extended family and dear friends. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Thomas, Edward, Albert, George, Maurice II, William, Gordon, Margaret Calvert, Ann Donahue, Helen Maniscalco, and Joseph, as well as Ruthie Ryan and Bernard Stepanouskus.
Visiting hours at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport will be Monday, February 6, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church, 42 Green Street, Newbury-port on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Private burial will be held at a later date.
