Marie's Story

Text size

Marie "Murielle" Matthias (Vermette) 85, a longtime resident of West Newbury passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.
She grew up in Amesbury, attending the local schools before joining the Airforce. It was there where she met the love of her life, her late husband, LeRoy "Roy" Matthias. With many adventures ahead, they lived in Pottstown, Pa. and Newburyport before settling in West Newbury to raise their seven children. Family was always important to her and she was so proud of her children; all of their successes and accomplishments. She has enjoyed her 12 grandkids; watching them grow, attending first communions, graduations, weddings and watching them start their own families; now celebrating six great-grandchildren.
When one mentions Murielle, it undoubtedly involves family, the garage in the center of town that Roy ran, when she was a cashier at West Newbury Food Mart, the West Newbury Seniors Center - quilting, knitting, crocheting and holiday parties, or the "gang" at Latitudes. She was a long standing member of the St. Anne's community, enjoyed time at the senior center, attending concerts at the town gazebo and most notably hosting the annual Memorial Day Parade "party" on Main street.
Murielle enjoyed everything life had to offer and spending time with her friends and family. It was difficult to catch that little blue car in the driveway. There was never anything a glass of wine or a "good cup of coffee" couldn't solve. And she lived by her motto, "If you are not having fun, it is your own fault". She is now celebrating the next chapter reunited with Roy with a glass of wine in hand - or maybe a "little" Amaretto.
Murielle was predeceased by her daughter, Murielle Mae, her husband, Roy and her sister, Marie "Jackie" Westover. She is survived by her sisters, Elaine Fowler of West Newbury, Gloria Patzner and her husband, Gene of Palm Harbor, Fla.; her children Debby Marsolais and her husband, Gary of Kensington, N.H.; Bonnie McNeil and her husband, Paul of Hampton, N.H.; Cindy Blunt and her husband Steve of South Hampton, N.H.; Terry Steele and her husband Tom of Rowley, Todd Matthias and his wife, Jacquie of Raymond, NH; Collette Powers and her husband, Jim of East Hampstead, N.H.; Her grandchildren Technical Sergeant Neil Kent, Amy and Ben Blunt, Tyler Steele, Alyssa Fedderson, Cailyn Steele, Ashley, Brooke and Courtney Matthias, James, Amanda and Daniel Powers; her great grandchildren Samuel, Rubi, Stella, Brayden, Hinley and Bohdi as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Calling hours will be held this Sunday Dec. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home 118 Friend St. in Amesbury. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday Dec. 18 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Anne's Holy Redeemer Church 300 Main St. in West Newbury. Burial will be in the Spring.
Memorial donations can be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Center.
