Lillie L.'s Story
Lillie L. (Ratay) Muldoon, 97, died Thursday afternoon January 26, 2017, surrounded by her loving family at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. Lillie was born in Derry, N.H., on April 5, 1919, to the late John and Josephine (Mazdziez) Ratay. At the age of 4, her family moved to Newburyport where she was raised and educated. She attended Newburyport High School for two years before leaving school to go to work with her mother as a garment trimmer to help her family during difficult times. Lillie met her husband, Richard, in Newburyport and the couple were married on October 11, 1941. They resided in Newburyport where they raised their family.
Lillie was an accomplished seamstress, making all of her family's clothes, as well as dresses for weddings, proms, and special occasions. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially their trips to Canada and St. Lucia, until his passing in 1984. Future trips with friends included Ireland and Hawaii. Lillie loved children; she nannied and babysat for several of her neighbors over the years but was never happier than when she was taking care of her grandchildren. She also enjoyed shopping and going out to dinner with family and friends.
Lillie is survived by her daughters, Pam Gannon and her husband, Kevin of Seabrook, Sheila Taplin and her husband, Robert of Pelham, Carol Gabriel and her late husband, Jack of West Newbury, and Donna Spalding of Plaistow; niece, Nonnie Meelia and her husband, James of Pataskala, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Eric Muldoon and his wife, Kim, Kristian Muldoon and his wife, Julie, Jared Muldoon and his wife, Laurie, Greg Taplin, Ken Taplin, Chad Landeck, Joseph Landeck and his fiancé, Diane, Lauren Wayman and her husband, Jonathan, Alyson Hall and her husband, Max, and John Gabriel and his fiancé, Jenna; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; as well as several other nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Lillie was predeceased by her son, Richard A. Muldoon and his wife, Karen.
Family and friends may call on Friday, February 3, 2017, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950. Parking available behind the Funeral Home. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Church followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Newburyport.
