Joseph A. "Sonny"'s Story
Joseph "Sonny" Schepici passed away January 16, 2017, at his home with family at his side. He was born in Boston, Mass., on February 12, 1935, son of the late Mario and Carmella (Iovanna) Schepici.
Sonny was a member of Local Four and worked as an operating engineer for over 25 years. He was like a little boy with big equipment. As time passed, he worked at the Hampton Tolls as a toll collector for 10 years, a good job for him as it enhanced his love for people.
He had a deep love for his children and was always there for them. He was their protector, teacher, and loved spending time with them. As the grandchildren came, he became "Papa" and loved every minute of it. He loved teaching them to swim when they were little and they all became excellent swimmers. He always worried about them and wanted them to visit every day. He never got enough of his children and grandchildren. In later years, he became "Papa" to his niece, Ella, who is now four years old.
Sonny did not have a lot of hobbies, as "Dad" and "Papa" were his hobbies. He did like to golf and gamble, and loved taking chances on scratch tickets and Keno.
A caring man, Sonny will be remembered for the time he saw a young man in a wheelchair struggling on the sidewalk. He stopped the car, put the young man and his chair in the car and took him where he needed to go. He was a loving man with a heart bigger than himself. Sonny is gone from our household but will never be gone from our hearts. We will all carry his love until our dying day.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Catherine of Seabrook, N.H. He was a loving father of the late Joseph R. Schepici, Steven Schepici and his wife, Cheryl of Lynnfield, Mass., Karen Schepici-Hagan of Amesbury, Mary Crocker and her husband, Walter of Amesbury, Stephen DeArville of Seabrook, N.H., Lorna Overton and her husband, Ronnie of East Boston and Denise Scapicchio and husband, Louis, also of East Boston; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchilden. He also is survived by his brother, Anthony Schepici of Marshfield, Mass., and his sister, Connie Celest of Billerica. He was brother of the late Arthur "Butchy" Schepici, Norma Jean Schepici, Dolly Zirpolo, and Emily Zirpolo.
Calling hours at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury, MA will be held on Sunday, January 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the Holy Family Parish Church, 2 School St., Amesbury, MA.
