John ("Jack") Beck of Newburyport, husband of Gerri Beck, passed away on Friday, November 24, at home with his loving family.
Jack was born in Newburyport on May 20, 1939, to Josephine and William J. Beck. Jack's siblings include William Beck (Janelle), Ann Bean (David), and Frances Gurczak (William).
Jack was a proud member of the Newburyport High School, Class of 1957, and was a member of the 1956 NHS Class C State Title football team. After high school, Jack served in the National Guard Reserves for 11 years.
Jack was the co-founder of Circle Finishing and then enjoyed working as a pipefitter for over 25 years at Metro Swift in Peabody, Mass., as a field supervisor. A true handyman, Jack could fix anything and passed his mechanical skills along to his children.
Jack was known for his big smile and hearty laugh (he was voted "Most Contagious Laugh" in high school).
Jack and Gerri made their home in Salem, N.H., for 28 years and moved to Newburyport in 2012. With incredible optimism he courageously battled ALS for the past five years without a complaint. His dream of staying in his home until his last day was met by the care and devotion received from his wife, Gerri.
In addition to Gerri, Jack is survived by his children, Jay Beck, Melissa Foley (Shane), Jeff Beck, Brian Beck (Rebecca), Tony Beck, Elizabeth Beck (Ian Anthony), Steven Lospennato (Elizabeth), Frank Lospennato (Lori), and Lisa Letendre (Jody).
Jack leaves 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Jack was a regular fixture at the Newburyport waterfront. Jack and Gerri were known for getting to the boardwalk early, staking a prime spot. Together, they enjoyed people watching and reconnecting with friends and classmates. Jack also enjoyed a 25-cent hotdog from Richdale when Gerri wasn't looking!
At Jack's request there will be no services.
Donations in his name may be made at www.alsfoundation.org/give/ or ALS Foundation for Life, P.O. Box 96, Natick, MA 01760.
