Jeannette E.'s Story
WEST NEWBURY, MA - Jeannette E. (Hills) Poore, age 95, a lifelong resident of West Newbury, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, March 6, 2018, at Country Center Nursing Home in Newburyport.
Jeannette was born in West Newbury on August 6, 1922, the youngest of five children of the late William and Grace M. (Pettigrew) Hills. She was a graduate of the former West Newbury Central High School, and upon her marriage to her beloved late husband of 52 years, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Raymond H. Poore, spent time as a military wife in Kentucky, Japan, and New York, before returning home to West Newbury where she spent the remainder of her life.
Everyone in the small town knew Jeannette, who had worked many years at the West Newbury Food Mart, the local grocery store and the place to find out about the news of the town. In her later years she could often be found spending her time at her home on Garden Street, visiting with family and friends, and knitting hats which she donated to the homeless.
Jeannette leaves behind her son, Wayne A. Poore of Epping, N.H.; along with several generations of grandchildren; nieces and nephews; extended family members; and dear friends. She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Kathleen Jeanne Poore, and by her four siblings, Glenna Hills, Eleanor (Hills) Woodworth, Philip Hills and Roger Hills.
Private burial will take place sometime in the spring, on a date yet to be determined, at Rural Cemetery on Chase Street in West Newbury. Arrangements by Elliott Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.
