Jean's Story

Jean N. Chase, 81, lifelong Newburyport resident, died peacefully early Monday morning, December 11, 2017, at the High Pointe Hospice in Haverhill, after a valiant struggle with cancer.
One of eight children of the late J. Walter and A. Reta (Tufts) Chase, she was born on March 26, 1936, at Anna Jaques Hospital.
Raised in Newburyport, Jean graduated from Newburyport High School with the Class of 1954, from Burdett College in Lynn in 1958, from the Stenographic Secretarial Program, and from Northern Essex Community College in 1981 with an Associates in Science Business Management.
Jean worked for Towle Silversmiths for 46 years in various positions and was in sales over 25 years as an executive secretary.
Ms. Chase was a very active member of Central Congregational Church in Newburyport and was a choir member over 58 years. Committees Jean served on were the Diaconate, Music, Trustees, Prayer Shawl Ministry, Women's Group, Care to Call Ministry, Clerk, Collector, Associate Treasurer and Memorial Gifts. She served from 1981 to 2010 on the Alumni Board of Northern Essex Community College.
Jean was a member of United Rebekah Lodge #13 of Newburyport from May 8, 1959, until December 13, 1999, and consolidated with Starlight Rebekah Lodge #64 of Beverly in December of 1999 until 2014. She was also a member of Quascacunquen Lodge #39, IOOF of Newburyport.
For more than 65 years, she attended nearly all Newburyport home football games and out of town games. Jean enjoyed attending sports games in which her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews participated. She also enjoyed working in her yard, reading and knitting.
Jean leaves a sister, Carol A. Daigle and husband, Francis A. "Pete" Daigle of Newburyport, along with 14 nieces and nephews and countless grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, John, Frederick and Lewis Chase; her sisters, Mary Chase, Helen McKinnon and Elinor Eklund; and two nephews, Edward McKinnon and Robert Daigle.
Visiting hours at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, will be Friday, December 15, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. with services conducted by Rebekah Lodge #13 and the Quascacunquen Lodge #39, IOOF at 3:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 16, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb Street, Newburyport, followed by burial in Belleville Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Steeple Fund of Central Congregational Church or to Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
