James L.'s Story
James L. Whalen, 74, a resident of Georgetown for over 40 years, passed away on October 26, 2017, at the VA Hospital in Bedford, Mass. James was born in Newburyport, MA on July 12, 1943, and graduated from Newburyport High School Class of 1961. He received a BA in History from the University of New Mexico. Mr. Whalen was a Vietnam Veteran, where he served his country as a First Lieutenant in the Army. James was the son of the late James J. and Alice Whalen of Newburyport. James leaves his son, Sean of Anchorage, Alaska, and three granddaughters, Denali, Sandia, and Elsie Whalen; and his daughter, Kelly and husband, Bill White, and granddaughter, Sara White of Eagle River, Alaska.
He is survived by his ex-wife of 37 years, Cricket Whalen of Ramona, Calif. He is also survived by his sister, Cynthia and husband, Barry of Plano, Texas; and his brother, Paul of Hudson, N.H. He was predeceased by his brother, John of Rancho Murieta, Calif. Mr. Whalen had passions for all sorts of History, particularly American, and for antiques and
antique hunting. He also liked rocks, fossils and dinosaurs: every year going to Rock and Mineral show in Topsfield, Mass. He had a dry sense of humor and loved talking to all sorts of people -- telling stories and jokes from his days as a salesman. He enjoyed taking long walks in Georgetown and sending the most unique packages to his family over the years.
Private burial in the Belleville Cemetery, Newburyport, will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his name to the Georgetown Council on Aging, 51 North Street, Georgetown, MA 01833. Arrangements are by Conte - Giamberardino Funeral Home, Georgetown, MA.
