George W.'s Story

George Brown passed away July 23, 2016. He was born in Ipswich on December 5, 1924, son of James W. Brown and Nora (O’Callaghan) Brown. He graduated from Ipswich High School in 1943. Shortly after graduation he joined the Army Air Corps., and was honorably discharged from the 8th Air Force with the rank of Sargent in 1946.
In 1951, he married Elinor Sullivan of Newburyport. They made their home in Newburyport where they had one daughter, Joanne Brown. George retired from New England Telephone in 1985 after 38 years. In 1999 his beloved wife, Elinor, passed away after 48 years of marriage.
George leaves his present wife, Madeleine (Descoteau) Brown, whom he married in 2001. After Madeleine entered into assisted living, George moved in with his daughter, Joanne and her husband, Sanford Rines, in May of 2015. In November of 2015, he moved with his daughter, Joanne, and son-in-law, Sanford, to Marshall, Arkansas where he enjoyed the remaining months of his life. In July of 2016 he developed pneumonia and passed away quickly at the North Arkansas Regional Hospital in Harrison, Ark.
He will be missed by his granddaughter, Danielle Simard of Somerville, who was the apple of his eye.
He leaves his brother, Norman Brown and his wife, Dolores Brown of Danvers; and his sister, Norma York and her longtime friend, Bob Kenney.
Family and friends may call on Thursday, September 1, 2016, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950. Parking available behind the Funeral Home. During the calling hours at 7 p.m., there will be a time of remembrance for Mr. Brown, open to all family and friends to tell a story or remembrance about George. His graveside service will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016, at 10:30 a.m at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newburyport. All are invited to join the family at the cemetery.
