BRUNSWICK, GA - George I. French passed away unexpectedly at Southeast Georgia Health Systems on January 25, 2018, in Brunswick, Ga., at the age of 83, as the result of a heart attack.
George is survived by his wife of 37 years, Martha French, of Saint Simons Island; children from his marriage to former wife Judith W. Simpson, Jeffrey W. French of Amesbury, Mass., and Jonathan C. French, also of Amesbury, Mass.; grandchildren, Chelsey L. French, of Rowley, Mass.; Alixandra B. French, of Denver, Colo.; Lyndsey R. French, of Amesbury, Mass., and Nathaniel J. French, of New York, N.Y.; his brother, Bertram T. French, Jr., of Lakewood, N.J., and his wife, Suzanne; his brother-in-law Eugene P. Crawshaw, wife Julie Chu, of St. Paul, Minn.; many nieces and nephews.
George was born on May 15, 1934, in Newburyport, Mass., to the late Bertram True French, Sr., and the late Helen Menut French. George grew up in Amesbury, Mass., along the shores of the Merrimack River. He graduated from Amesbury High School in 1952, and from the University of New Hampshire in 1956, with a degree in Civil Engineering. With the advent of computer science, he became a computer programmer, and established his own consulting firm specializing in small IBM mainframe systems. He continued his consulting business supporting many New Hampshire municipalities as well as construction, medical, office supply, and other companies in the New England area until his retirement in the 1980s.
Mr. French lived in Amesbury for over 70 years, and maintained an active interest in the youth of the community, first by serving on the Amesbury Finance Committee, as well as on School Building Committees, and later as Clerk of the Works for the Cashman School renovation. He was a member of the Main Street Congregational Church. He was also a member of the Amesbury Finance Committee for many years.
A graveside memorial service will be held at the family plot in the Belleville Cemetery, Newburyport, Mass., in late spring.
