Evelyn Getrude's Story
Evelyn passed away peacefully on August 2, 2017, at Country Manor Nursing Home. She was the daughter of Hudson A. Andrews and Edith G. Colby. She graduated from Newburyport High School in 1943. Evelyn is survived in death by her daughter, Cheryl Bryant Mansur, and preceded in death by her son, Albert Bryant Jr., and daughter, Jody Lyn Bryant. She was also preceded by her brothers, Burton Andrews of Connecticut and George Andrews of Merrimac, Mass. She is survived by her sister, Pauline Andrews Smith of Salem, Ore.; and brother, Gordon Andrews of Newburyport, Mass.
She married Albert Bryant Sr., who preceded her in death. Evelyn worked for several years at the city hall in Haverhill, Mass., as a Senior Clerk in the Public Property Department. Evelyn had a great love of singing and as a young girl she sang for the USO. Later, she sang in Minstrel Shows, at church in the choirs and at one time she sang with a country western band called The Wanderers. She loved it when the singers came to the nursing home.
Evelyn's greatest love throughout her life was the fire department. She always told people that if she had been born later in time when they let girls in, she would have been in the fire department. She loved and deeply respected everything about it. She loved to talk to everybody that would discuss the latest big fire and all the newest equipment. On Evelyn’s 90th birthday, she was honored at a big party by the Salisbury, Newburyport, and Newbury fire departments. They sent firefighters to present her a lamp that was made from an old fire helmet. It had seen its share of fires. We are sure that now she is with her father, brothers and uncles discussing all the new equipment and all the fires. She is in her glory!
Evelyn was known as Mom, Sis, LaLa, Jam, Gram, Grammy, GiGi and firebug. She was loved by all and will be missed very much.
By Evelyn's wishes, she will be cremated. Private services for family and close friends will be announced at a later time.
