Elizabeth J.'s Story
Elizabeth "Betty" J. (Brennan) Stoddard, 93, of Topsfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 after a brief illness at Masconomet Healthcare Center in Topsfield.
Betty was born in Somerville on February 2, 1924, the youngest of eight children to the late Matthew and Mary (Maguire) Brennan.
Betty attended Somerville High School and graduated from Secretarial School and the Red Cross Nursing Program. She worked as a secretary for Buick Corp. of Boston for several years before her marriage. Over the ensuing years, she held a variety of jobs, all why raising her family. One of her favorite jobs was working for Sears Roebuck & Co. as a salesperson.
Mrs. Stoddard was a devout Catholic throughout her life and had strong faith. She credits her faith for helping her get through some very difficult times in her life.
She was happiest when she was surrounded by her family and friends. She especially loved holding and hugging her grandchildren and her first and only great-grandson.
Betty was very social and outgoing, enjoying the company of both people and animals. She was an ardent cat lover and had several during her life. She also enjoyed many activities and hobbies including reading, crocheting, sewing, gardening, playing cards, and games of chance. She especially enjoyed playing bingo, but enjoyed it even more when she won!
Betty was the beloved wife of 41 years to the late Frederick E. Stoddard, Jr., who predeceased her in 1995.
She is survived by her five children, Ellen Marie Stoddard and her husband, Thomas H. Wright of Boxford, Patricia L. Doiron and her husband, Dennis of Florida, Susan M. Stoddard Bertrand and her husband, Douglas N. of Biddeford, Maine, Frederick E. Stoddard III and his wife Barbara of Sandown, N.H., and Matthew B. Stoddard of Seabrook, N.H.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and 20 nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her seven siblings.
Betty was a truly special woman who is dearly loved and already dearly missed!
A celebration of her life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2017 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 10, 2017 in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will follow at Holyhood Cemetery in Brookline, Mass. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
