Born in Amesbury, Jan. 17, 1927, Elizabeth was the only child of the late Harold P. and M. Helen (Titcomb) Gale and was a graduate of Amesbury High School. After graduating from high school, she went on to attend Simmons College and graduated from Northwestern College in Illinois, with a bachelor’s degree in Dentistry. For some years she worked in a dental office in Chicago, Illinois, then came back to settle in Boston where she continued her work as a dental hygienist.
After an early retirement, Betty, as she was known by her family and friends, returned to the family homestead in Amesbury, caring for her mother, Helen, until she died on April 23, 1997, at the age of 101.
Betty enjoyed many care-free summers camping at their summer place on Moxie Lake, Maine, as well as traveling with friends throughout the country. She was an avid sports fan, especially partial to the Patriots and the Celtics. A longtime supporter of the former Amesbury Play House, she was a member of the Friends of the Amesbury Public Library, the Main Street Congregational Church, and a 50-year member of Friendship Chapter No. 58, Order of Eastern Star.
She leaves behind her cousin, Raymond Reed and family of Seabrook, N.H.; very close friends, who were like her adopted children, Bill and Heidi, along with dear friends, Pat of Phoenix, Ariz., Bob and Joe of Florida, and Lynn and Julie. She will be sadly missed by them all.
Visiting hours will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury. Eastern Star Services will be conducted by Friendship Chapter No. 58, at 3:30 p.m., prior to the visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Shriners’ Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
