Elizabeth "Bette"'s Story

Elizabeth “Bette” Burns passed away Friday, April 14 2017, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on December 10, 1937, in Haverhill, Mass., to Elizabeth and John Lebor. She was the light of Johnny’s eyes. Bette spent 74 years of her life living on Plum Island. As a child she excelled at dancing, figure skating and ultimately was the founder of the Haverhill, Newburyport and Georgetown skating clubs. Along with her dad, she opened and operated the Bette Marie restaurant on Plum Island for many years, and prior to her retirement worked as a receptionist for the Anna Jaques Hospital Radiology Department.
Bette was married to the love of her life, Harold “Joe” Burns for 58 years. They travelled often and spent many winters in Holiday, Fla. She loved being with her family, and her favorite job was being “Nana” to her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Jane Burns (the ice skater) of Roanoke, Va., Erin and Jeff Todd of Kensington, N.H., and Julie Smith of Ossipee, N.H. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Krysten and Daniel Gallanagh, Jeffrey Todd, Jr., Colby and Jesse Todd, Taylor Todd, Michayla Belanger and Colin Piper, Tyler Belanger and Janie Hilliard, and Mackenzie Belanger. Finally, her beautiful and loving great-grandchildren, Bristol Rose and Ellie Mackenzie and Miller Joseph.
Family and friends are invited to her Funeral Mass at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport, Mass. Burial immediately following Mass at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Haverhill. At the family's request, there will be no viewing hours. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Bette’s family with her funeral arrangements.
