Edward F.'s Story

Edward F. Sullivan, 74, longtime Amesbury resident, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017, at RiverWoods Retirement Community in Exeter, N.H., after an extended illness.
Edward was born in Amesbury on February 14, 1943, the first of two sons of the late Edward F. Sullivan and Bernadette J. (Savoie) Sullivan. In 1948, Edward met his wife, Linda (Cote) Sullivan, while in first grade at St. Joseph’s School in Amesbury. Edward and Linda married in 1963.
While Ed was starting his career as an apprentice at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, he began an extended period of night school education, as to model the importance of lifelong learning for his children. First earning an associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lowell Technological Institute, followed by a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology from Northeastern. He also pursued executive development programs at both Babson College and Boston University. Ed subsequently held positions at Honeywell and then later, Digital, before concluding his career at Teradyne.
Ed was known for his analytical mind, quick wit, laugh, collection of L.L. Bean tattersall shirts and his mustache. Family events that brought together his children, grandchildren, and extended family was where he was happiest; especially if it included a slice of Linda’s blueberry pie. Ed lived his life as a man of integrity, humility and service. He will also be remembered for the grace and dignity that he showed daily, in spite of the struggle with his illness.
Throughout his life, Ed was an active and passionate believer in the Boy Scout program. A proud three-palm Eagle Scout from Troop 7 in Amesbury, Ed became an advocate for the program’s ability to build young men of character. Often seen paddling down a river, Ed taught young scouts how to prepare for a camping trip or mentored multiple generations of scouts who went through the program. He also inspired and worked with his two sons and his daughter to follow suit as Eagle Scouts and as a Girl Scout – his Eagle-ette.
In addition to his wife, Linda, of 54 years, he is survived by son, Michael Sullivan and wife, Anne Marie of Amesbury; daughter, Laurie Lawliss and husband, Bill of Amesbury; son, Brian Sullivan and wife, Heidi Erdmann-Sullivan of Haverhill; brother, Robert Davis and wife, Judah of Syracuse, N.Y.; grandchildren, Julia Lawliss, David Sullivan, Carolyn Sullivan; as well as nieces, a nephew, cousins and extended family.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Highland Street Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edward’s memory may be made to Boy Scout Troop 7, Holy Family Parish, 9 Sparhawk St., Amesbury, MA 01913. Burial will be private at the request of the family.
