Donald Martin's Story
Donald Martin Emerson, born in Newbury on January 5, 1931, passed away on November 15th at Avita of Newburyport. He was the son of the late Charles and Ruth Emerson and spent his life in Newbury and Newburyport.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Lancaster) Emerson and was predeceased by his first wife, Johanna (Sweeney) Emerson. He also leaves a sister Joyce Davis; daughter, Donna Collins; and sons, Bruce (Linda), Charles, Scott (Jill); step-children, Michael (Rose) Leary, Diane (Christopher) Gerrish, Karen (Steven) Martin, Eileen (Joseph) Gurczak, Stephen (AnnMarie) Leary and Brian (Tina) Leary; grandchildren, Lisa Collins, Dan Emerson, Bethany Durkee, Audrey Letaio, Ian Emerson, Meaghan Pickard, Ryan Leary, Brendan Leary, Christina Gerrish, Matthew Gerrish, Stephanie Gerrish, Jennifer Martin, Jeffrey Martin, Jonathan Gurczak, Erica Gurczak, Katelyn Leary, Caroline Leary, Patrick Leary, Cameron Leary, Gemma Leary, Samantha Leary, along with many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also pre-deceased by his son, Brian Emerson, brother, George Emerson and sisters, Lura Sutherland and Lillian Gardner.
Donald served in the Marines during the Korean War. He worked at Diamond International for many years before opening Emerson Electric Supply in the early 1960’s. After retiring he enjoyed boating, wood working, reading and traveling. He was a long time member and past president of the Newburyport Rotary Club, Newburyport Chamber of Commerce, as well as a member of the Masonic Temple. He was on the board of the Griffin House and Anna Jacques Hospital. He also enjoyed serving on the Board of Investment at the Newburyport Bank for over 40 years.
Calling hours will be Friday, November 17th from 4 until 7 PM at the Elliott, Woodworth and Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 18th at Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb Street, Newburyport, with burial at St. Mary’s cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his memory to the Friends of the Newburyport Library, Great Lakes Caring Hospice or the Pettengill House.
