David Becherer Newbert Newburyport, MA - David Becherer Newbert, long time resident of Newburyport, Byfield, and more recently Amesbury, passed away from heart failure on 11/22 after Thanksgiving dinner with his family. He was 76.
David was the middle of three sons of the late Frank Buchanan and Helen (Becherer) Newbert.
He was born in Plainfield, N.J. and raised in Westfield, N.J. After graduating from Westfield High School and Colgate University he began his career at Irving Trust Company and Hornblower Weeks in New York City. He continued his career as a Municipal Bond salesman in Boston at Hornblower Weeks and then Kidder Peabody, Downing and Co. and A.H. Williams until his retirement.
In 1966 he married Lillian Mayer and served in the Army Reserves. In 1969, the couple moved to Newburyport, during the city’s famous restoration. David was very generous with his time and talent supporting many organizations such as Opportunity Works where he was a longtime Board Member and past President. He was an Incorporator of the Institution for Savings and member and past President of the Dalton club. He was also a long time member of the Municipal Bond Club of Boston and the Essex County Club in Manchester, Mass.
David was an avid golfer and skier, as well as a hiker and racket sports enthusiast. He is remembered by many friends as being a supportive and animated participant who regaled his friends with lengthy stories of his ‘athletic feats’. Enthusiasm for sports of any kind endeared him to many. He devotedly supported his beloved Boston and local teams, attending events at the Byfield Bowl and Newburyport Memorial Stadium as frequently as Fenway Park and the Boston Garden.
David is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lillian Marie (Mayer), their daughter Ashley Newbert, her partner, Keith Banks and their daughter Rosie, their son Stratton Newbert; his wife, Eunice Yim Newbert and their children, Theo and Ella. He is also survived by his niece Riley Newbert Hastings, her husband William Hastings and their children Cameron and Leah. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Frank and Philip Newbert.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Opportunity Works, Opportunity Way in Newburyport. Arrangements are by Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.
