Charles (Charlie) T.'s Story
Charles (Charlie) T. Barney, 92, of 50 Mansion Drive, Rowley, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017.
Born in Newburyport, on January 18, 1925, he was son of the late Thomas and Nettie (Coffin) Barney, and husband of the late Rebecca C. (Charlton) Barney.
Charlie was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy. Following his service, he owned and operated Veterans Garage in Rowley. For 35 years, he was on the Rowley Police Department and at one point as Chief of Police. He also was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rowley, the Rowley Fire Department, the Rowley VFW Post 5707, and manager of the Rowley Light Department, a Boy Scout leader and Little League coach.
For many years, Charlie, together with his wife Becky, enjoyed playing golf, motorcycling, dancing, hiking in the White Mountains, and going on trips in their motor home.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth C. Barney of Byfield; a sister, Trudy Romanski of Barnstead Parade, N.H.; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sons, David T. Barney and Robert E. Barney.
