Carole D.'s Story

Carole (Zachman) Regalbuto, our loving mother of four, grandmother of 11, devoted wife for 61 years, and friend to many died peacefully on Saturday, June 24, 2017, finally succumbing to complications from COPD, as she was held and surrounded by family at Merrimack Valley Hospice. She was a strong woman who maintained a keen wit and positive outlook to her last days.
Carole was born June 17, 1932 in Canton, Ohio to Jean (Wheatley) and Clarence Zachman. She spoke fondly of childhood summers spent with her grandparents in the “Mudtown” neighborhood of Salineville, Ohio. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she nurtured others by earning a degree in 1954 from St. John’s College of Nursing, Cleveland, Ohio, as a Registered Nurse. It was in Cleveland that she fell in love with and married John Regalbuto on May 5, 1956. She was his “Sweetheart” and he was her “Sugar Daddy."

Carole began her nursing career in Cleveland working with polio victims, then spending most of her 35-year career managing orthopedic wards at John Peter Smith and St. Joseph Hospitals in Fort Worth, Texas, where she and Dad settled down in 1962. She was an awesome nurse, and her children witnessed first-hand her skills, knowledge, and hard work during high school service projects with her patients. Mom retired in 1998 after she and Dad moved to their adopted hometown of Georgetown, where they made many kind friends.

Throughout her life, Carole enjoyed being with friends, traveling, and entertaining. Her love of holiday parties and décor became well known in Georgetown. She loved visiting new places, having a grand adventure, and driving fast cars. Mom swam with stingrays in the Cayman Islands, rode a camel in Egypt, strolled ancient streets in Rome, Pompeii, and Sicily, climbed Diamond Head in Hawaii, para-sailed in the Bahamas, and celebrated her 60th anniversary on Cape Cod. She relished breakfast every Thursday with her Georgetown coffee club.

Carole is survived by John, her loving husband of 61 years; children Michael, David, John, and Mary Jean Regalbuto; sister and brother-in-law, Lael (Zachman) and Rudy Skerl of Centerville, Ohio; brother and sister-in-law Robert and Loretta (Ruday) Zachman of Waldorf, MD. The family thanks Dr. Mary Schwartz of Newburyport, Donna Guilford and her generous staff at Home Care Connection Network of Amesbury, and Merrimack Valley Hospice in Haverhill, for the care they provided to Mom and our family.
On Thursday June 29, all friends are invited to celebrate her life beginning with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Parish on Andover Street, Georgetown, followed by interment at Harmony Cemetery on Central Street, Georgetown and a buffet lunch at the Black Swan on Andover Street.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Conte - Giamberardino Family Funeral Home, Georgetown.
