Barbara A.'s Story
Barbara A. McDermot of Amesbury passed away peacefully at Lahey Clinic on April 1, after a battling ovarian and liver cancer. She was born on March 15, 1947, to George and Anne Lagasse, deceased. Barbara is survived by her daughter, Amanda McDermot; granddaughter, Lidya Belanger; brother, Frank Lagasse; aunt, Marie Lagace; cousin, Eric Lousignant, all of Amesbury.
Barbara was raised in Amesbury and attended Amesbury schools. She was a woman with many interests who loved the beach and spent her summers on the warm sand by the ocean. Early on, her love of horses led her to spend several years following the harness racing circuit around the New England area. Each year she would attend the International Boxing Hall of Fame on induction weekend in Canastota, New York with her longtime friend, Harold Russell. She worked as a waitress for years at well known establishments in the Amesbury, Haverhill, Newburyport area and soon became a favorite with many of her customers. When not working, she would pursue her love of golf at the Amesbury Country Club, this too became another hobby. She was also a regular member of the choir at Immaculate Conception Parish in Newburyport.
Barbara was briefly married to Jay L. McDermot of Amesbury. They had one daughter, Amanda. She was a devoted mother to Amanda. When Amanda’s daughter, Lidya, now 11, was born, Barbara loved and enjoyed her granddaughter as much as she doted on Amanda.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Lidya Belanger and Family at RTN Federal Credit Union in Amesbury.
