Alfred J.'s Story
Alfred J. Smith, 88, died on Jan. 24, 2017. Al was born and raised in the Beachmont section of Revere to Joseph and Katherine Keough Smith. After graduating from The Immaculate Conception School, Revere and serving in the National Guard, Al met the love of his life, Mary Theresa Paul of Miramichi, Canada, and they married on Feb. 5, 1955. Al and Terry raised their family of five children while living in Saugus, West Newbury, and Newburyport, Mass., and Hampton, N.H., and eventually retired to Port Charlotte, Fla., in 1996. Most of his career was spent at Union Color in Boston. Al took great pleasure in following New England sports, and he enjoyed time on the golf course with his sons or with his Florida buddies. He had a quiet sense of humor and could tell a good story when encouraged. He will be missed by his wife and best friend, Terry, as well as his children, Al Smith, Kevin and his wife, Judy MacCannell Smith, Karen and her husband, Tom Janoski, and Sue McDonald; as well as his daughter-in-law, Heather Kuske Smith. He was loved by his grandchildren, Angela and her husband, Van Porter, Michael Otero, Keith and Ryan McDonald, Melissa, Colleen, Mark, Ella and Peter Smith; and his great-grandchildren, Alana and Mason Porter. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Paul Smith, who died on May 23, 2016. Al also leaves his three sisters, Norma Maltais, Virginia Whitten and Joan Donegan, a large extended family and many dear friends.
A family memorial service will take place at a later date.
